Elsie Hetherman, Veteran Joseph Reynolds and Sherry Crouteau gather with grade seven students

Heroes at Home Program

President of the Pickering Veterans Association, Elsie Hetherman, in partnership with The Durham District School Board launched the new Heroes At Home Program last month at Sir John A. Macdonald Public School. The Pickering pilot program brings World War II veterans to the schools to share their first hand experiences with grade seven students. In addition to helping students learn about our country's history, it also highlights the importance of good character, as well as giving back. Beginning in September 2010, the Heroes at Home Program will become a part of the grade seven curriculum in Pickering and 17 dates will be chosen within the school year to execute the program. Elsie Hetherman is hopeful that the program will grow by 2011 and will eventually include veterans of the Afghanistan war.
